In the present lecture, eigenvalue problem is explained. The eigenvalue problem is a special case of boundary value problem of ordinary differential equation. In this lecture, a spring-mass system is considered to highlight the practical significance of eigenvalue in engineering application. A sample analytical approach is explained to calculate the eigenvalue of any given matrix. The next two lecture deals with numerical determination of eigenvalues using two methods, namely, (i) the polynomial method and (ii) the power method.
