Les Miserables - Argentina - 2000
An almost full, pro-shot performance of the Argentine production, which played Teatro Opera in Buenos Aires in 2000. This was the second Spanish language adaptation of the three Spanish translations of the musical; the first was for the Spanish production in Madrid, Spain, in 1992. Later in 2002, the third Spanish translation would be done for the Mexican production in Mexico City. This was recorded by two news crews, one located close to the stage with soundboard sound and the other located on the balcony and capturing audio with a microphone, which makes both audio streams different, with variation in quality. The video quality, although sort of grainy in parts, is among the best I've ever seen of a live performance of the original production of this musical. The original lighting design was not designed for video cameras, so the show has always appeared dark in most video recordings, including those from professional sources. I don't know which cameras were used here, but they provide a rare and accurate video record of what audiences see in the theatre live onstage. Here, the colors come through beautifully, so one can appreciate David Hersey's lighting design, and you can actually see the intricate detail of the sets and stage floor like never before. It's unfortunate that there are many snippets of the show missing throughout, but I think every single number is included, although not all are complete. I've seen the original production 29 times, and this is definitely the closest one can get to seeing a video that shows a glimpse of the live experience and the colors and beauty of the original production.
