The withered fig tree in Mark 11 provided a prophetic symbol and enacted parable depicting the judgment to come on the Pharisees’ ritualistic, legal externalism. Yet as Alistair Begg points out, this parable was also an act of mercy, since Christ’s judgment causes us to wonder, “Am I like this withered tree?” Jesus challenges us to bear the fruit of godly faith in prayer and a forgiving spirit.
