Hello everyone, welcome to our video about coral reefs. Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and important ecosystems on the planet. They cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but are home to over 25% of all marine life. Coral reefs are found in tropical waters around the world, from the Pacific and Indian oceans to the Caribbean and the Red Sea. A coral reef is an offshore ridge which is composed mainly of calcium carbonate. It is formed from the secretions of small marine animals called coral polyps. Coral polyps thrive in shallow, warm, nutrient poor, tropical waters. These tiny animals attach themselves to objects such as rocks or existing reefs and build tiny shells of calcium carbonate around themselves. They sit in these shells and use their tiny tentacles to catch food. When coral polyps die, new coral polyps build their shells on top of the old shells of the previous generation. In this way the reef expands over time. They are made up of millions of tiny animals called polyps, which secrete a hard outer skeleton made of calcium carbonate. 'An offshore ridge, mainly of calcium carbonate, formed by the secretions of small marine animals.' (Oxford Dictionary of Geography) 'Coral reefs are often called the 'rainforests of the sea' because of their biological productivity and species diversity. They provide food, shelter and nurseries for many species of crustaceans and fish, but are very sensitive to environmental change.' (The Contemporary Caribbean by Robert B. Potter et al) CSEC Geography objectives are Types of coral reefs in the Caribbean (‘fringing, barrier,)A. Location, distribution of coral reefs in the Caribbean.  B. Conditions necessary for the successful formation of coral reefs.  Causes of coral reef destruction (for example, sedimentation, sewage pollution, tourism). A. Consequences of coral reef destruction (for example, coastal erosion, decline in fish stock).  B.
