Fractal burning (Lichtenberg figures) is extremely dangerous. This process uses high-voltage electricity—often thousands of volts—which can be lethal instantly. Do not attempt this without professional equipment, proper electrical knowledge, and strict safety protocols. Never touch the wood or the probes while the power is on. Turning Walnut into Functional Art In this video, I’m taking a live-edge walnut slab and using high-voltage electricity to burn unique, lightning-like "Lichtenberg figures" across the surface. These fractal patterns create deep channels that will eventually serve as the perfect "river" beds for a custom epoxy resin table. The Process: Surface Prep: Sanding the walnut to a clean finish and applying a conductive electrolyte solution (baking soda and water) to help the electricity travel. The Burn: Tracking the current as it hunts for the path of least resistance, creating those organic, branching fractals you see in the thumbnail. What’s Next? This is just the beginning.
