The amount of refraction depends on the indices of refraction of the two media and the angle of incidence. When a wave enters a new medium at an angle, the wave will bend. The amount of bending depends on the difference in the indices of refraction of the two media. The index of refraction is a measure of how much a medium bends a wave. The higher the index of refraction, the more the wave will bend. The angle of incidence is the angle at which the wave hits the boundary between the two media. The larger the angle of incidence, the more the wave will bend. It is important to learn about refraction because it is the cause of many optical phenomena, such as rainbows, mirages, and lenses. Some suggested refraction activities for the classroom include: -A teacher could set up a light source at the front of the classroom and a piece of paper at the back. They could then have students come up one at a time to hold a variety of different objects between the light source and the paper.
