Line weight
Introduction: 00:00 Line weight helps us define our sketches so they are clear and easy to read. In this video I will show you how to use line weight to define a 3 dimensional form. Today I will be drawing with just one ballpoint pen, but I can get a variety of line weights from it. As you can see in the top right, I am able to double up or triple up my lines so they appear darker and stronger. This is important way to defining the contour of your object, as well as any overlapping lines. Here I have drawn out a simple form in 3-point perspective. I also calculated where the shadow would be casting if I had a light source in the top-left, but today, we will just be focusing on defining the line weight of the object. Adding line weights: 01:26 First I will start by defining the outline or contour of the form. This will be my strongest line weight. You can always make a line weight stronger, so start I like to start a bit thinner than I need and add more at the very end. Next I will define the overlapping edges. This will be my second strongest line. Now I will define my edges on the box. Adding a shadow: 06:55 And finally I will add a cast shadow and hatch the shadow side of the box. We will be covering how to add shadows in another video. And that's how you define line weight to a sketch.
