In this video we discuss some basics about Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP).
LLDP discover information about neighboring device - by sending LLDP messages to other devices. LLDP a cisco proprietary protocol used by Cisco devices.
LLDP advertises following information and other Cisco devices on the network receive this information.
The information shared by the devices with each other using LLDP includes.
Device ID: the host name
Address list: Network / data-link addresses
Platform: The model and OS of the neighbor device
Port identifier: The interface on other end that sent the LLDP advertisement
Capabilities: Information whether the neighbor is for example, a router or a switch
Information is exchanged using LLDP messages after every 60 seconds (by defaults). Every device holds this information for 180 seconds (by default).
Hold time is the lifetime of an entry in the table.
