Lipless Crankbait Setup
In late winter and early spring, a lipless crankbait is one of the best tools for covering water and triggering reaction bites from pre-spawn bass staging near flats, points, and grass lines. Rod: 7’ medium-heavy, moderate or moderate-fast action. The softer tip helps keep fish pinned on treble hooks while still giving you enough backbone to rip the bait free from grass. Reel: 6 series gear ratio baitcaster. This range lets you slow-roll in colder water or speed up when fish get more active. Line: 15 lb fluorocarbon for open water and cleaner bottoms (better sensitivity and depth). Bait selection: Choose red/craw patterns when bass are feeding on early spring crawfish. Focus on flats leading into spawning areas, submerged grass, and transition banks. Retrieve: Use a yo-yo retrieve, slow roll, or rip-and-pause presentation. In colder water, keep it slower and let it fall. As water temps rise, increase speed and make aggressive rips through grass to create reaction bites.
