Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD)
It is crucial for us to understand how to create ATHLETIC children. Several decades ago, it was common for children to play amongst themselves. This includes playing tag, climbing trees, biking, learning to balance, hike, run, etc. When they got involved in sports, they played many different sports, usually one per season. As rec teams were replaced by travel teams and club teams, and high school varsity sports took a back seat to these teams, our view on kid's sports participation has changed and had been persuaded by these clubs that make a hefty buck on desperate parents. Now children become early skill technicians without athletic ability. This leads to the increasing incidence of adolescent sports-related injuries and overuse injuries.
