Lost Boundaries [1949]
“Lost Boundaries” centers a fair-skinned Black physician Scott Marshall (white Mel Ferrer), eager to begin a new life with his equally fair-skinned wife (white Beatrice Pearson) in a film formatted like a ‘very special episode’ gently addressing the complexities of racism with a white face. When the all-Black hospital is unexpectedly hesitant to hire him due to his fair skin, he decides to “pass” to provide for his family. Playing into the tragic mulatto trope, Scott begins to fear for his life when the truth about his racial identity comes out. Director: Alfred L.
