Lost Manchester
In this video we look at Manchester's lost history. We are looking at 4 things in and around Manchester city centre that no longer exist. Lost Manchester. Some of them are within living memory and two of them are not. We look at slum housing in Victorian Manchester along the River Irwell. This is a rare occasion where we can link an actual historic photograph with a place on a map. We go out to Trafford park and look at the site where the Metropolitan Vickers works was. They had a water tower built by the Westinghouse factory that was a very distinct design. The Westinghouse tower was reduced in height during the second world war and an anti aircraft gun was placed on top as the Metropolitan Vickers factory would have been a target during WWII. In our history tour of Manchester we also look at Barton Power station that occupied a site near the Trafford centre. And an old Victorian shopping arcade called Lancaster Arcade demolished in 1977. All these things are part of Manchesters Lost history.
