Lucidigital VR Workspace Prototype
More updates on my VR (and future AR) workspace! I'm entering this into Leap Motion's 3d jam, and it's coming along decently well. There are still some quirks. I do know that using a floating window setup is *not* the best system for all cases, and that in many cases UIs that anchor to the user's body are better, as well as objects that act like virtual tools in the world. The final system will use floating-windows only when appropriate. Users will have a 'globe' they can lock floating windows to, and this globe will follow them around the world as they move. This will be used mostly for things that are user specific, like their avatar, hand choice, skin options, conversation logs, wearable/implanted technology readouts, etc. For things that are part of the real world but have embedded, loadable interfaces, I'll use something like a floating exclamation point that can be gazed at and activated, upon which a virtual interface object (like the file browser you see in the video) will emerge. As you can see in this video, a common design language is slowly emerging, and pictographic icons like ! and ? will immediately let the user know in all cases, where to find out how to interact with the new objects they encounter, even when the objects contain strange or new things. The help icon showing the user how to summon the file browser is the first example of this. There will also be purely virtual-objects like the hierarchy viewer/file browser widget. Worlds will be able to have as many 'desks' or other spaces as you'd like in them, and I'll probably use a blink-style teleporter for switching from space to space. I made the first version of the gesture/pose identification systems today. They're abit rough around the edges, especially seeing as how that 'hold globe' pose doesn't track very well in the first place, but I'm starting to figure this whole thing out. Yes, I know it is kind of silly to have the 'text editor' button load a file browser. The reason for this is that I need something that can pick a file to load before actually loading it. The sky's the limit for this project. Hopefully someday it'll move beyond just experimental tinkering.
