Lung Biopsy

A lung biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed from the lung for examination under a microscope. It is typically performed to diagnose various lung conditions, such as infections, inflammation, tumors, or other diseases like interstitial lung disease. The biopsy helps doctors determine the nature of the condition, which guides treatment decisions. There are several methods used to perform a lung biopsy, including: Needle Biopsy: A needle is inserted through the chest wall to collect a tissue sample from the lung. This may be done under local anesthesia, often guided by imaging techniques such as a CT scan or ultrasound. Bronchoscopy: In this procedure, a flexible tube (bronchoscope) is inserted through the mouth or nose into the airways to obtain tissue samples from the lungs. It’s typically used to sample tissues from the airways or lung surfaces. Surgical Biopsy: In some cases, when the other methods are not suitable, a surgical biopsy may be necessary. This involves making an incision in the chest and directly removing lung tissue for testing. This may be done as minimally invasive surgery (thoracoscopy) or through a more traditional open surgery. Lung biopsies are essential in diagnosing lung cancer, infections, unexplained cough, persistent pneumonia, and other lung-related health issues. It typically requires some form of anesthesia and is done with the help of imaging to guide the physician to the right area. After the procedure, the tissue sample is sent to a laboratory where it is analyzed by a pathologist to help diagnose the condition. Like any medical procedure, a lung biopsy carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, and damage to the lung or surrounding structures, but it is generally considered safe when performed by an experienced healthcare provider.
