Like blood circulation, the lymphatic system is made up of millions of little vessels that branch all around the body. Blood plasma containing nutrients moves out of capillaries at the arterial end, tissue fluid containing wastes reabsorbs back in at the venous end. Not 100% of the fluid is drawn back to the bloodstream at capillaries. About 15% of it is left in the tissues in the interstitial spaces. This is known as lymph. Lymphatic system picks up the lymph and returns it to the circulatory system near the two subclavian veins behind collar bones. Lymph is blood minus RBCs and platelets. Colour of lymph is white/ colourless. Throughout the lymphatic network, there are bean-shaped structures called lymph nodes. It contains T lymphocytes (White blood cells) that scans for pathogenic bacteria, viruses, cancer cells and kills them. Each individual has around 500-700 lymph nodes all over the body. Lymphatic vessels are not present in the brain, spinal cord, eyeballs and bone marrow. Lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow are called lymphoid organs as they produce white blood cells. They are the body’s check posts. Lymphatic system uses are: to maintain body fluid volume and homeostasis, to scan for pathogens entering the blood stream and to transport dietary fat absorbed from the intestine.
