Make AI Your Search Team

Traditional e-commerce search systems often struggle to scale relevance without significant engineering effort, typically requiring dedicated ML teams and constant tuning. In this talk, we explore a different approach: using AI agents as a search layer that can interpret queries, reformulate them, and iteratively improve results on top of existing search infrastructure. We share an experiment using the Wayfair product dataset, comparing a simple keyword-based baseline against an agentic system powered by an LLM. The agent is able to reason about user intent, understand synonyms, adjust filters, and refine queries dynamically, leading to improved ranking quality in many cases, though with tradeoffs in latency and occasional missteps.
