When the harmony starts moving every bar, it’s easy to tense up, and panic. Many players think they need to respond to fast moving harmony with more notes, more scales, more information. That usually makes things worse. In this video, I’ll show you a simple practice game I use with my students to build calm, fluent improvisation over fast-moving chords. We'll use Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man and loop two chords, gradually shrinking the time you have on each chord, training your ears and instincts to stay relaxed as the harmony speeds up. This isn’t about memorising licks or theory, it’s about honing your ears and intuition and gradually acclimatising so you can navigate fast chord changes without panicking. ⸻ What you’ll learn: ✅ How to practise over fast-moving chord changes without freezing ✅ A structured game to build fluency and voice leading, that you can use on any tune ✅ How to reduce tension and overwhelm when the harmony speeds up ✅ Why starting simple makes you stronger under pressure ⸻ If you found this helpful, let me know in the comments what you struggle with most in your improvising. I release weekly practical games and exercises designed to help you turn musical concepts into instincts you can rely on when you’re actually playing. Related videos: 🎥 One Shape. Every Chord.
