Making a machinist's jack - part 3 (completion)
In this video the machinist's jack is completed. The main focus of this video is forming the ball joint for the pad. This involves using an internal radius turning tool and a press tool made off camera. Some minor adjustments are needed to get the radius forming tool to perform properly. The press tool works perfectly. As a precaution a trial run is performed and small adjustments incorporated into the final dimensions of the female part of the ball joint. Some heat treatment is also undertaken. 00:00 Introduction & summary of work to be undertaken 00:47 Internal radius forming tool 01:47 Making a test piece to as proof of concept for pressing together joint 02:24 Forming external .25in radius 03:54 Turning external feature of ball joint 04:14 Drilling, boring, and forming internal radius 07:43 Chamfering and parting off 08:12 Fixing part-machined pad to arbour with adhesive 09:12 Milling 6 slots 09:46 Releasing adhesive joint and case hardening pad 11:13 Tempering tabs to avoid cracking 12:25 Test crimping of joint showing the die used to form the joint 16:43 Inspecting test crimp 18:08 Preparing the real pad for crimping 18:37 Inspecting hardened screws and case-hardened components 19:35 Incorporating changed dimensions of tabs to make stronger 20:28 Final crimping using press tool and arbour press 21:00 Inspecting ball joint (final) 22:19 Lessons learnt in this video
