After some experimenting, I found a consistent method to making snowflakes under the microscope. First drip some liquid air onto the top of a microscope slide by turning a can of compressed air upside-down. Then, with the can of air right-side-up, spray air over the slide for a few seconds. By a process called evaporative cooling, the liquid air droplets quickly solidify into beautiful branched crystals. You can read more about these shapes called 'dendrites'.
