You can use the maneuvering board to determine the true wind. This is helpful in real life for your logbook, sailing, or military operations.
It also appears on Coast Guard merchant mariner exams at certain levels in the Navigation General module.
We use the maneuvering board to plot the own ship vector, the apparent wind, and then deduce the true wind.
Remember that winds are named for the direction in which they originate!
