This is because, sand possesses vital properties required for moulding Moulding sand has three constituents. They are 1) Sand 2) Binder 3) Additive 1. Sand : Sand contains silica , clay and moisture . Moulding sand is classified as follows: Natural sands Synthetic sands Special sands 2. Binder : Binder is added to the moulding sand to bring the property of cohesiveness. The binder binds the sand grains together and brings strength. There are three types of binders: Clay type binders Organic binders Inorganic binders 3 Additive : An additive is added to moulding sand to improve the properties like strength, refractoriness and permeability• Additive is not used for binding purposes.
