Map Types and Data Classification
Language preferences reflect an important element of cultural identity within a population. Although English is the dominant language across most of the United States, many states—and even individual communities—feature frequent use of other languages. This lab explores techniques for visualizing the distribution of French speakers in Louisiana at the census tract level. By applying different map types and classification methods, both the spatial patterns and numerical characteristics of the French-speaking population can be represented in multiple ways. When designing a map, it is essential to consider the intended audience as well as the spatial variability present in the underlying data. In this video, I demonstrate how to create a variety of maps to explore the distribution of French speakers across Louisiana using ArcGIS Pro. By working with census tract and parish-level data, we apply multiple cartographic techniques to highlight both spatial patterns and population changes over time. 🗺️ Different types of maps covered in This Tutorial: 1️⃣ Choropleth Maps – Three versions using different classification methods. 2️⃣ Map Book – A detailed parish-by-parish breakdown using a chosen choropleth style. 3️⃣ Heat Map – Visualizing concentrations of French speakers across Louisiana. 4️⃣ Advanced Choropleth Map – Showing percent change in French speakers over time by tract. 5️⃣ Proportional Symbol Map – Displaying population counts of French speakers by parish. 6️⃣ Dot Density Map – Representing the population distribution of French speakers at the parish level. By the end of this video, you’ll see how different mapping techniques can provide unique perspectives on cultural and linguistic data, while also learning how to effectively communicate spatial variability to your audience. 👉 Perfect for GIS students, researchers, and anyone interested in language distribution and cartographic visualization. #ArcGISPro #ChoroplethMap #GIS #Louisiana #LanguageMapping
