Mariel Zagunis is the most decorated fencer in U.S. history AND she's still going strong. In 2004 she won the first Olympic gold medal for an American fencer in 100 years. Four years later in Beijing, Mariel repeated her gold medal performance in an historic 1-2-3 American sweep. Then she added a bronze medal to her tally in the team event at that Games. At the 2012 London Olympics, the U.S. athlete delegation elected Mariel for the distinguished honor of carrying the American flag into the Opening Ceremony.
During our chat, we discussed all of these monumental feats, what growing up with parents that are also Olympians was like, and how she plans on making history once again in Rio.
