McCoy Style Quartal Modal Improvisation Annotated
The backing track, MIDI file of my solo and a transcription PDF file of this video can all be found on my website at: http://www.Lot2learn.com This is another installment in my quartal/modal themed tutorials. For the form, I use a simple progression that starts out in C Minor for 8 bars and then goes to E Flat minor for 4 Bars, then back to C Minor for 4 bars and ends up with a descending chromatic line 1 bar a piece Gb sus to F sus to E sus to EFlat sus then a single bar II-V (D Minor7 to G7) back to the top. Improvisation is using C Minor pentatonic and Eb minor and AFlat major pentatonic as well as appropriate chord tones for the chromatic part. I am trying to illustrate that although there are many patterns used in the improvisation, it is much more than just a series of random patterns strung together. There is a logical construction of phrases which create a meaningful solo. One very important concept to be derived from this solo is that music is always moving forward as tension is created and builds followed by a release. Techinical notes: For this video I am using a new screen capture program to capture the MIDI keys called BB FlashBack Pro from Blueberry Software. I am very impressed with this screen capture software. Not only is it very easy to use, but it does an excellent job. There is a FREE version called BB Flashback Express which can be downloaded from their website here: http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/Products/bbfbex2.exe Thanks for listening. Roger (Lot2learn)
