The medieval Rebab evolved from the bowed and skin covered instruments called "Rebab" in Al-Andaluz. It was played in the middle ages and developed into instruments like the Rebec.
The Rebabs at first only had two strings and no fretboard. Over time the number of strings increased and they were pressed down on a fretboard in the end.
The instrument died out in Europe and lives on in the andalusian Rebabs still played in northern Africa.
This is a Rebab copy in a low register with three gut strings and a fretted fingerboard.
