The battle is remarkable because many of those who died in it were thrown into one of five mass graves with all their kit on, and these were dug up in 1928-30. The bones tell a gruesome story of the fate of the men in this battle, not just from the wounds suffered in the battle, but also the injuries and ailments they were carrying before the battle started. About 1800 men died in the battle.
