Welcome back to our OCR GCSE Computer Science (J277) revision series! Today, we are looking at Paper 1: Memory and Storage. To help visualise these concepts, we are using an interactive Storage Laboratory to see exactly how your computer stores data.
We will cover:
- Primary Storage: The crucial differences between RAM (Volatile) and ROM (Non-Volatile).
- Virtual Memory: What happens when your RAM gets completely full, and how data spills over into secondary storage.
- Secondary Storage Race: Comparing the speed and 6 key characteristics (Capacity, Speed, Portability, Durability, Reliability, Cost) of Solid State (SSD), Magnetic (HDD), and Optical (DVD) storage.
-Unit Converter: How to convert from Bits and Nibbles all the way up to Terabytes (and the base-10 rule for J277!).
-Exam Practice: We jump back into the examiner's shoes to mark a student's answer on Virtual Memory.
