Mike McClellan -- Angie
Davy Graham's tune, 'Angie' (also Anji or Angi) -- written for his girlfriend in 1959 and released on his debut EP in 1962 -- is an infectious guitar romp in 'A minor' that has earned it's place as being one of the most cherished instrumentals in many a folk-guitarist's repertoire. After Bert Jansch reworked Graham's original tune, Paul Simon cast his own spell upon the piece and released it on the iconic Simon & Garfunkel album, 'Sounds of Silence'. The tune was launched into a world where few guitar instrumentals are ever heard -- the song charts (topped by Mason Williams' masterpiece, 'Classical Gas', in 1968... another 'Am' composition). Just as Jansch and Simon developed Graham's original groove, Mike McClellan -- while sticking closely to Jansch's published arrangement -- has also added his own touch by bookending the tune with his peaceful muse, 'Still'. This superb performance of 'Angie' confirms Mike McClellan to be an outstanding acoustic guitarist -- something many of us have known for decades -- and one can only hope that he records an instrumental album at some point.
