Misirlou; a lesson for violin
In this lesson I teach how to play Misirlou on the violin, and discuss some of the background to this fascinating tune Misirlou is a tune which comes in many disguises. It was made famous by surf guitar king Dick Dale in the 1960's, but it is much older than that. He learned it from his oud-playing Lebanese uncle, and performed it in order to fulfil a challenge to play a whole tune on a single string. It was first recorded by Greek Rebetika artist Michalis Patrinos in 1930. It was given a shmaltzy jazz treatment by Woody Herman in the 1940's It was performed as a Greek Folk song by Pete Seeger in the 1960's, and appeared in the film Pulp Fiction in 1994, and included in the Black Eyed Peas song "Pump it Up". It is frequently performed as a klezmer tune, which is how I first learned it, but it seems likely to have originated in Asia Minor. All in all it is a tune that has spread itself widely through many musical genres! In this lesson, I show some of the ornamentation and variation which can give it a klezmer feel.
