The sun was just climbing over the horizon when I, Captain Al, fired up the boat and eased us out toward the waters near Mary’s Fish Camp. The air was calm, that perfect kind of quiet that only exists before a full day of fishing chaos begins. Constable John stood tall at the bow, scanning the flats like he was on official patrol, while King Baby David sat beside the cooler, already declaring himself “Ruler of the Rods” for the day. I just shook my head and laughed—another legendary trip in the making. We drifted into a sweet little pocket where the water turned that perfect shade of green. First cast—boom. John hooked up. Rod bent, drag screaming, and just like that the peace was gone. “That’s a good one!” I shouted as he worked it in, keeping steady like a pro. A solid redfish broke the surface, flashing in the morning light. Not even five minutes later, King Baby David was yelling, “I got one! I got one!” His rod was bouncing like crazy, and sure enough, he pulled in a feisty mangrove snapper. The kid held it up like a trophy twice his size, grinning like he just conquered the ocean. The action didn’t stop. Cast after cast, we stayed on them. Snappers, a couple more reds, and even a surprise trout that came out of nowhere. Every time we thought it might slow down, the water said otherwise. By midday, the sun was blazing and the cooler was filling up nicely. We kicked back for a moment, letting the boat drift as the breeze picked up just enough to cool us off. John finally relaxed his “constable stance,” and King Baby David started talking about opening his own fishing kingdom. I looked around at the water, the rods, the crew—and just knew this was one of those days you don’t forget. Simple, wild, and full of laughs.
