In this video, I go over the origins of free agency in baseball, and how nearly a century of the reserve clause paved the way for radical change. Curt Flood, Andy Messersmith, and Dave McNally all went up against the system with the help of Marvin Miller, to create modern free agency. I go over service time as well, and how it plays a part in determining how much money a player is able to receive in their contract. I touch on pre-arbitration years, arbitration (including the super two designation), and of course, free agency. I also discuss non-tendered free agents and how anyone can become a free agent if they aren't offered a contract by their current team.
