Coils are typically used to control digital outputs such as relays, solenoids, or indicator lights. Function code 1 allows a Modbus master device (usually a controller or computer) to request the current state of one or more coils from a Modbus slave device (such as a PLC or a remote terminal unit) In more detail, when a Modbus master device sends a function code 1 command to a Modbus slave device, it requests the status of a range of coils. The command consists of the function code 1 followed by the starting address of the coil and the number of coils to be read.
