Module 3 – Unit 8 – Part 1: Agritourism as a Rural Development Pathway This presentation conceptualizes agritourism as a multidimensional pathway for rural development that integrates agricultural production, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship. It frames agritourism as distinct from conventional tourism by linking visitors directly to farming landscapes, indigenous knowledge systems, and locally rooted traditions. The Dak Lak Province case study from Vietnam illustrates how coffee cultivation can be paired with ethnic minority cultural heritage to generate authentic visitor engagement. Participatory harvesting, indigenous knowledge transfer, and cultural exchange events emerge as core experiential components. The discussion addresses both the preservation potential and the commodification risks inherent in cultural integration, emphasizing the need to safeguard authenticity. Economic dimensions are examined through additional income streams, seasonal stability, and value chain integration, while social cohesion is identified as a collateral benefit of collective participation. A complementary case from Nigeria broadens the geographic perspective, demonstrating the model's adaptability. Structural obstacles—insufficient capital, skill gaps, language barriers, and seasonal fluctuations—are weighed against creative community responses such as off-peak programming and cooperative structures. Ultimately, the presentation positions agritourism as a transformative development model that complements traditional agriculture, validates local knowledge, and creates replicable frameworks for community-led rural revitalization across diverse contexts.
