Monkey Magic (Arcade) 1979
Monkey Magic is a rare 1979 arcade game released exclusively in Japan by Nintendo. It is one of Nintendo's earliest arcade efforts and was developed in collaboration with Ikegami Tsushinki. The game is a color "Breakout" clone where players use a paddle and ball to destroy a large formation of blocks shaped like a smiling monkey's face. Unlike standard block-breaking games, the target is a detailed monkey head wearing a red hat. Players must first hit numbered arrows to open the monkey's mouth before they can destroy its "teeth" for high scores. Small monkey heads occasionally drop down to deflect the ball away from the targets. Hitting the nose speeds up the ball significantly. Hitting an eye causes it to "wink" (changing from an O to an X) for bonus points. The game ends when all balls are lost; if you successfully clear the entire face, it is restored, and the difficulty increases. Monkey Magic was released in very limited numbers and remained "lost media" for decades. It resurfaced in 2015 when a cocktail cabinet PCB was found and dumped for preservation; an original upright cabinet was later discovered in a 2016 Japanese auction.
