This video is part of the set of lectures for SE 413, an engineering design optimization (EDO) course at UIUC. This video introduces the topic of monotonicity analysis (MA), a vital EDO problem formulation analysis strategy that can help 1) detect formulation deficiencies, such as unboundedness, before investing in numerical solution efforts, 2) identification of active constraints, and 3) development of expert intuition that can aid solution analysis and problem reformulation efforts to enhance both formulation and solution accuracy. Core MA concepts are presented, along with several conceptual and quantitative examples.
concepts behind the creation of well-posed and non-trivial engineering design optimization (EDO) problems.
