Monrocroscope 2 - Cheyenne
We're doing critical listening here analyzing the form and harmonic content of the classic Cheyenne from 1955. We explore the idea of Bill's connection with Native American tones through his wife, Carolyn, who was part of the Blackfoot Native American Family according to Bill's son, James. This tune (with the chanting at the beginning and end) was very influential on Peter Rowan who went on to explore this energy in "Land of the Navajo". To remember the rhythms we use a subjectively fun mnemonic to memorize the flow with lyrics for Bill's mandolin part. This molecular level study of the original recordings is some of the best time that can be spent to understand bluegrass and Bill Monroe's mandolin picking. With the modern ability to slow down the recordings without affecting the pitch, we have a major advantage there which we can use to discern nuances that would have been more difficult slowing records down which would bring the pitch down potentially obscuring what is happening.
