Mosaic Tiling Tips

Whether working with mosaic tile for a backsplash or making a creative tabletop mosaic from tiles, these tips will help you achieve a quality finish for your mosaic tile project. Using tiles of different thicknesses makes uniform placement of the tiles difficult. For example, a tiled mosaic tabletop would be inconvenient to use if the surface of it was bumpy and uneven. Choosing tiles that are the same thickness will give you a much more even surface. Tiles made from different materials have different levels of water absorbency. Some will absorb more water and others will absorb essentially none at all. Using dry tiles on a wet mortar or thinset mix will cause the tiles to absorb the water needed for proper curing. Soak the tiles in water before placing to keep proper hydration of the mortar or thinset mix used to set the tiles. Back buttering or back troweling the tiles makes for a better mechanical bond between the tiles and the surface they are being attached to. This technique creates a stronger finished product with less likelihood of the tiles dislodging or popping off completely.
