Consumer Price Index: Your Window into India’s Economic Health
National Statistics Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) estimates the Consumer Price Index (CPI) every month to measure changes in retail prices over time for a fixed basket of goods and services that households purchase for the purpose of consumption.
In the current CPI series, the base year is 2012. The base year will now be revised to 2024 to better capture today’s consumption patterns. The item baskets and their weights are derived from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES).
