MOT Voltage doubler (half wave)
A voltage doubler converts an AC voltage into a higher DC voltage. The primary purpose of a voltage doubler such as this one is to enable the MOT voltage to jump a large spark gap for use in Spark Gap Tesla Coils (SGTC). The problem with this particular voltage doubler is that it provides half wave rectification, meaning the current is only flowing half the time and the voltage polarity is constant. The 4000 volt output is actually the peak voltage, and this is why the arcs are relatively short. However, the arcs are much brighter and can jump a large gap. In the next video I shall construct a full wave doubler, hopefully they will be contrasting. The circuit is the classic Villard doubler circuit that you find in your microwave oven. A schematic is provided in the video. If you're watching my videos you might know that chemistry and electricity are quite expensive hobbies.
