Mount Peale Summit, UT
April 24, 2026. Mount Peale summit. The highpoint of the La Sal Range at 12,726 feet. Drove in from the east and unfortunately, La Sal Creek was 5-6 inches deep over the road. Was not willing to risk driving through the partially frozen water and silty sand. Hiking in on the road added 4.5 miles one way, then I took the “jeep trail” to the climbers trail. Patchy snow in the trees with some boot tracks to follow, but it does not always lead the right way, so pay attention. Once at the gully, I scrambled around for a bit, before deciding that putting crampons on was easier than dealing with loose rocks. Snow was very firm and icy in some places. Reached the ridge and took off crampons, but quickly ended up needing microspikes. Patches of snow were very icy along the ridge due to windy conditions. Finally reached the summit in just under 4 hours. Hunkered down out of the wind for a snack, then hiked back out. Gully snow softened up and I microspiked “skied” down. The climber trail is not well marked, so any non-locals should definitely be prepared for some map checks and route finding. Lots of pika, some mountain goat tracks and scat. Lots of deer and moose tracks on the road. Only saw one guy and his dog coming up when I left the summit. 00:00 road walk begins 00:46 jeep trail 01:10 climber trail 02:06 snow gully 02:40 on the ridge 03:45 on the summit 05:25 headed down 07:34 back at treeline 08:41 back at the rig 09:38 bonus Bears Ears National Monument, Newspaper Rock petroglyphs
