Can you ever really find the "perfect" multitool right out of the box?
In this video, we trace the history of the multitool back to Tim Leatherman’s 1975 road trip and look at two modern heavyweights: the Leatherman Surge ($150) and the Bibury Titanium Alloy Multitool ($85).
While both are impressive, neither was exactly what I needed for my workflow. I decided to get hands-on and customize them both. The Bibury has incredible features—a full-size hex socket, Damascus components, and a highly readable ruler—but it lacked spring-loaded pliers. I fixed that with a little "surgery" using a donor head from a Walmart tool.
As for the Surge? It didn’t take to the Bibury’s titanium frame, so I gave it a dedicated blade upgrade instead. Now, I have a specialized outdoor/kitchen workhorse and the ultimate titanium shop tool.
Are you team "Stock" or team "Mod"? Let me know in the comments how you’ve customized your Multitools!
