The term "PC" stands for Personal Computer, and it only became a household term after the launch of the IBM "Personal Computer" in 1981!!
Before that, smaller computers were usually called "microcomputers." But IBM’s branding was so influential that "PC" quickly became the standard name for computers made for individual people instead of giant mainframes used by companies and universities!!
When other companies began making machines compatible with IBM’s system, they were called "PC clones" or "PC compatibles." That’s how "PC" eventually became shorthand for almost any non Apple desktop computer!!
