In horizontal time - the time of succession, of before-and-after, of one moment following another along a linear sequence - noise is constituted only in response to what it is not. In this temporal dimension, noise doesn't pre-exist as a self-contained entity waiting to be recognized. Instead, it comes into being through difference, through the act of distinguishing itself from (and being distinguished from) what surrounds it in the temporal flow.
