Kostis Kaffes and Christos Kozyrakis argue that preemptive scheduling is in fact _a good thing_ in the strive for microsecond-scale latencies for application level communication. Most purveyors of microsec solutions move datapath processing to user space so as to avoid pre-emption and have better control of latencies.
