Simplify your proximal silver diamine fluoride (SDF) applications by eliminating the use of floss. Apply to the contact area of clean, dry teeth. Saturate the contact area on the buccal, occlusal, an lingual surfaces with SDF. Allow it to absorb by capillary action for one minute. Cover with fluoride varnish (2 studies have now shown this increases the efficacy for caries arrest by 4%). Reassess and reapply at a minimum of six month intervals. This method is easier for patients to tolerate, simpler for clinicians to do, prevents SDF from absorbing into the floss instead of the tooth (which is where we want it), prevents accidental bleeding of the gums from the floss, and reduces procedure time and overhead costs.
