Newcastle Garbage
Years ago when I set out on my original trip to Newcastle, I was hoping to come across one of these side loaders, but unfortunately I wasn’t in the right area. Although back at the end of 2012 I made my way back to Newcastle for the newer equipment and was pleased to get a look at three of the 2006 model ACCOs operated by the council works and services. If I recall correctly, two of the four trucks were classed as spare/extra vehicles and the other two had set daily garbage runs, both of which are featured in this video. During the mid to late morning period on a Friday, I entered the new estate area of the suburb of Fletcher and quickly noticed a truck was around due to empty and full bins on different sides of the first street. I remember stopping and just listening, instantly hearing the exhaust of my favourite Cummins engine from somewhere up in the hills of the place. After a very brief search I found the truck and was greeted by a very cheery driver who gave me a green light for the camera. It was enjoyable hanging around this truck with that exhaust you can hear right at the beginning, plus the swift operator made it just as fun to video. Shown is #3864 emptying many of the new 140L garbage bins, which had been rolled out following the introduction of a green-waste service since my original visit. I followed him mostly in the area where I found him and then we crossed into neighbouring Maryland to help out the others. In the last clip the trucks do the final stretch of road for the day, giving you a look at another 07 ACCO and one of the new trucks the council got in 2011. Back then the four 06s were about due for replacement, so chances are they’re gone or only a couple remain as spares.
