OWP desires to accelerate gains in National Water Model performance, which may come from the use of additional or alternative models with parsimonious formulations, and computational hydrologic schemes that are demonstrably more appropriate in certain hydrologic landscapes. OWP and its partners envision creating a Next Generation modeling system using a modular, open software development paradigm. The anticipated end result is a new hydrologic modeling system that meets the needs of multiple federal agencies and provides a computational environment to test alternative formulations on computing hardware varying from desktop to cloud to HPC systems, using common tools, geospatial libraries, data standards and workflows. This seminar discusses design ideas, preliminary progress to date, including collaborative, open development of the initial proof-of-concept, proposed next steps, and how to become involved.
