Hey all! It's been a while! I wanted to share some behind the scenes goodies for the next project I'm working on with the goal of sharing tutorials, and as much of the project as possible on GitHub. Taking a bit of time away from constantly cranking YouTube content out has given me some time to think about new projects, structure, and balancing the time commitment to YouTube and free education. I'm now really excited for this new project and wanted to share some of it with you in the very...very early stages. Back in the day I really enjoyed playing RuneScape, and thought about how cool it would be to be able to make a game like that. Unfortunately, my programming skills were not good enough 20 years ago to even attempt such a thing. The tooling around gamedev was also not as good which made it significantly harder. Since "Old School RuneScape" came out, particularly on mobile, I was very interested in playing it again. I've spent a lot of time playing it since it released on mobile and thought, this would be a really fun project to make and share the experience and lessons learned on YouTube. I'm not currently aiming on making a full "Old School RuneScape Clone", but I did think it would be fun to recreate some of the core mechanics, boss fights, and larger encounters. To even do a single boss fight, there are a lot of mechanics that need to be implemented, like.. Tile Based Movement Global 0.6s tick rate Combat skills + formulas for hit / damage calculations. Prayers (maybe not strictly necessary, but most interesting bosses or encounters require praying). UI Inventory Equipped Items Food Hitsplats To get started with those on a smaller scale, I thought I'd start with one of the most simple skills: Woodcutting. This gave me a very simple, attainable goal to get some of the core systems built, while being able to think about the future skills and interactions with the design choices being made for Woodcutting. Somewhat unsurprisingly, I created an overly complex system first, but was able to quickly realize this wasn't the right path because it was already hard to get it working right with such a simple skill. So I trashed that one and came up with a new, more Unity-oriented approach that seems to be working much better so far. This video shows the full gameplay loop of Woodcutting: Find a tree Click on tree Move to tree Cut tree Tree potentially depletes, you gain logs. If tree is depleted, wait for respawn or find new tree. Experience, leveling up, and the woodcutting axe affecting the chop rate is not implemented yet, but the bones are in place for it. Looking forward to sharing more of this early access stuff with you and some tutorials soon!
