The Nicholson bench is finally finished! In this one I tackle the top and work holding elements.
I went with a crochet in place of a face vise. I have found that I rarely used the face vise on my last bench and adding one seemed like an unneeded expense. A crochet is a planing stop mounted to the front of the bench. It resists the force of the plane while working the edges of a board.
I drilled a series of peg holes in top and I have found this to been extremely beneficial for bracing boards. This came from the work of Jonathan Fisher. Additional information about Fisher can be found in Joshua A. Klein's book "Hands Employed Aright."
To round things out I made a wooden bench hook to assist with sawing duties and added a Veritas planing stop.
