NightSky Plugin — Sound Samples
Download a free trial of NightSky Plugin ► https://www.strymon.net/product/nightsky-plugin/ With the NightSky plugin, you can create vast soundscapes from just a few notes, and apply pitch and harmonic manipulation to your reverb tails with synth-like filter sweeps. It fundamentally changes what’s possible in the world of reverb, bringing new sonic inspiration with every twist of a control. --- Chapters: 00:00 Intro 00:12 Glimmer Grains 00:47 Untethered 01:26 Pomp runner 01:57 Nylon Glimmer 02:35 Envelope Beat 03:35 Fourth Shimmer 04:06 Superstrings 04:35 Uncharted Quadrant 05:29 Ghost Banjo 06:09 Sidechain Juno 07:10 Martian D35 07:59 Heat Shield 08:24 Less Gravity --- Glimmer Grains - 00:12 Reflections from the Sparse reverb bounce around as they react to the piano key attacks, while Glimmer dynamically accentuates some of the lower harmonics. Drive is post-reverb adding saturation as it reacts to each channel of the stereo reflections. Untethered - 00:47 A fast and deep modulation of the Sparse reverb delay lines creates a ghostly vibrato, while harmonics shaped and generated by Glimmer and post-reverb Drive are filtered into an almost vocal-like shape by the low pass filter with a very high Resonance setting. Regenerative Shimmer set to detune subtly and slowly raises the pitch of the reverb decay. Pomp runner - 01:26 With staccato inputs, the Sparse reverb texture generates reflections that are audibly distinct from each other, but with legato sources like the synth sound here, Sparse provides a lush, smooth reverb. Nylon Glimmer - 01:57 At the beginning of this example, Glimmer dynamically enhances the lower harmonics present in the twinkling reflections of the Sparse reverb texture. Halfway through the clip, Glimmer is switched to its High setting, enhancing higher harmonics. Envelope Beat - 02:35 Drum loop transients trigger a positive envelope that modulates the cutoff frequency of the resonant low pass filter at the end of the signal chain after the reverb and Drive saturation. Drive is set for post-reverb, generating extra harmonics for the low pass filter to work with. Changes to the Depth control affect the sensitivity of the envelope, and Speed changes the decay time of the envelope. Near the end of the clip the envelope is switched from positive to negative. Fourth Shimmer - 03:35 The Diffuse reverb texture creates an ambient bed for the piano to play above, while Shimmer applied at the input of the reverb creates harmonies that are up a major fourth. Superstrings - 04:06 With the Sparse reverb texture set to its minimum core size, regenerating Shimmer set for an octave down creates a huge sound like a string section backing up the mandolin input signal. Uncharted Quadrant - 04:35 A mono audio signal is made absolutely huge by the Diffuse reverb texture, with a random waveform modulating the Size/Pitch for unpredictable changes that sometimes sound like a giant piano being flexed somehow. Ghost Banjo - 05:29 First a dry signal is heard, then just the reverb with some slow modulation on the resonant low pass filter. Then Shimmer is turned on, applied at the reverb input and set for an octave down. Sidechain Juno - 06:09 At first the reverb is bypassed, then it is applied to the synthesizer input signal while NightSky’s low pass filter cutoff frequency is modulated by an envelope triggered by a kick drum sidechain signal. At first a negative envelope is used, pushing down the cutoff frequency at each kick transient. Then the envelope is changed to positive, opening the filter and revealing the lively reflections from the Sparse reverb texture. Martian D35 - 07:10 A long decay signal from the Dense reverb texture is shaped by the resonant low pass filter, with the cutoff frequency being slowly modulated by a triangle wave. Heat Shield - 07:59 A drum loop is mangled by a very high amount of Drive saturation, post-reverb. Part of the fun is that the Size/Pitch of the reverb is being modulated by a positive envelope reacting to the input signal. Less Gravity - 08:24 Modules activated one by one: first just the Diffuse reverb, then Shimmer is activated (input, octave down), then Glimmer (low setting), then Drive (pre-reverb), then Drive is switched to the post-reverb position, and finally Shimmer is deactivated so that less bass hits the Drive saturation, resulting in different harmonics from the Drive section.
